There are quite a few varieties of health insurence which you can obtain. If you work for a company that provides you and your family with health insurence, consider yourself fortunate. People remain in jobs they are not happy with to retain health insurence. Buying a comprehensive health insurence policy can be prohibitively expensive, that is why many take their chances and go without it.

A large percentage of the population does not receive any health insurence from their place of business. Larger businesses usually have some form of health insurence with the employees sometimes being responsible for part of the premiums. On the other hand smaller businesses do not usually have health insurence. The business is not making enough money for the proprietor to be able to get coverage for his or her employees. The pool of workers in a small business is not large enough to be able to get the discounts from the small number of employees. In the future perhaps, many small companies can combine to get better rates.

Consequently, the employees must get their own health coverage. They can get an individual policy or if they are married a family plan. If they cannot afford this, there is another alternative. A combination of an HSA (Health Savings Account) along with a high deductible inexpensive health insurence policy. The employer has the option of putting money into the HSA, along with the workers. It is not mandatory on his part to do so. Anything not covered by the high deductible individual or family health insurence policy will be paid from the Health Savings Account. If you run up high bills due to a serious illness, there will probably not be enough coverage in both the high deductible policy and the HSA together to meet your obligations. This policy is basically a stopgap measure until you can get something with more coverage. The situation is in flux now regarding the possible coming changes in medical coverage.
